You can carefully slide your carriage off the needlebed to examine the underside.

There's no mystery or magic to how the carriage works!
The needle butts are directed through channels. Depending on each needle position and your carriage settings, the needles will either pick up yarn and knit or not (forming stitch patterns).

Don't be overwhelmed by this geeky stuff ... just follow along to get a general idea of how things work.
